Solana Binance hack: FBI lists 1 wallet as its SOL starts to move
The FBI’s Binance hack notice, out Saturday, names 628 addresses and only 1 on Solana; that wallet began swapping SOL for bitcoin on Sunday, The Block reports.
The quick take
- Price: $SOL at $94.55, down 1.4% in 24 hours (-1.4% ↓), as of 4:41 p.m. ET, Nov. 1.
- Trigger: The FBI’s Binance hack notice lists 628 addresses, and 1 of them is on Solana.
- Watch: Whether Solana apps and RPC operators block the wallet; Elliptic sees no freezes on Solana so far.
What happened
Solana ($SOL) now has a single address on the FBI’s Binance hack list. In a notice out Saturday, the FBI tied the theft of about $6.3 billion to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group. The lone Solana Binance hack wallet began swapping its $SOL for bitcoin ($BTC) on Sunday, The Block reports.
The FBI issued the notice with the U.S. Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigation, CoinDesk reports. By The Block’s count, it names 608 Ethereum addresses, 19 Bitcoin addresses and 1 Solana address. The agencies ask DeFi services, RPC node operators, instant exchanges and analytics firms to refuse transactions linked to them.
The hack hit Binance on Thursday, Oct. 29. Binance puts the loss at about $6.3 billion, while blockchain analytics firm Elliptic counts $6.43 billion.
Who’s buying and selling
On-chain tracker Lookonchain said the wallet began trading 970,522 SOL, worth about $95.9 million, into bitcoin using the Relay service, according to The Block. It moved 486,970 SOL, about $46.4 million, in the hour before Lookonchain’s 5:35 a.m. ET post.
Solscan showed about 466,700 SOL still in the wallet at 1:25 p.m. ET, The Block reports. Elliptic says no funds have been frozen on Solana, per The Block. Across all chains, it counts $2.85 billion frozen or seized, about 44% of the total it tracks.
$SOL traded at $94.55 at 4:41 p.m. ET, down 1.4% in 24 hours on Binance’s SOL/USDT pair. No source links that move to the wallet’s sales.
What to watch next
The FBI expects the hackers to keep using swap services and DeFi tools, CoinDesk reports. Chainalysis CEO Jonathan Levin told CoinDesk the attackers already use “thousands of addresses.”
Binance reopened withdrawals in phases from 1 a.m. ET Sunday, The Block reports. The next test for Solana is whether its apps and node operators turn the wallet away.
Bottom line: The Binance hack now reaches Solana through one listed wallet, and how far its coins travel depends on who blocks it.
