Solana block times halve to 200ms as the final speed cut goes live
Solana’s last planned slot-time cut took effect at about 14:35 UTC on Oct. 9, bringing block times to 200 milliseconds from 400ms.
The quick take
- Price: $SOL at $108.93, down 0.2% in 24 hours (CoinGecko, 19:41 UTC).
- Trigger: The fourth and final step of the SIMD-0525 upgrade went live at epoch 1053.
- Watch: Block skip rates and vote latency, the checks used to clear each step.
Solana ($SOL) finished its last planned speed cut on Friday. Solana block times are now 200 milliseconds, half the 400ms the network used until August.
What happened
The final step took effect at the start of epoch 1053, at about 14:35 UTC (10:35 a.m. ET) on Oct. 9, the Solana Foundation’s upgrade page says. All four steps of the SIMD-0525 proposal now run on mainnet, devnet and testnet.
Earlier steps cut slot times to 350ms on Aug. 21, 300ms on Aug. 28 and 250ms on Sept. 18. Each 50ms cut had its own feature gate. The network was not to take the next step if block skip rates looked too high.
Why it moved
Shorter slots mean faster confirmations for users, the Solana Foundation says. Validators still produce blocks in runs of four slots, so one leader’s window shrinks from 1.6 seconds to 800 milliseconds, per SIMD-0525. That limits how long a single block producer can delay or reorder trades.
Total capacity stays about the same. Per-block compute limits fell from 37.5 million to 30 million units, CoinDesk reported. Blocks are smaller, but they come twice as often.
What to watch next
A blockhash now expires after 30 seconds instead of 60, so offline and manual signing flows get less time. Apps that turn slot counts into clock time need the new rate. An epoch now lasts about 24 hours, down from roughly 48.
The Foundation’s Sept. 28 review found skip rates stayed stable and low through the earlier cuts. It also saw higher vote latency, with nodes in Asia and South America hit hardest, and urged caution on 200ms before the Alpenglow upgrade.
$SOL traded at $108.93 at 19:41 UTC, down 0.2% in 24 hours and 8.7% over seven days, per CoinGecko.
Bottom line: Solana now makes blocks twice as often as in August, and skip rates and vote latency will show whether it holds that pace.
